Memories of Uncle Dom

When Felecia had a 90th birthday party for her dad, my son couldn’t wait to go and have his photo taken with his great, great, uncle. My mom’s uncle and godfather, Uncle Dom. We all enjoyed Uncle Dom’s company throughout our lives, but my best memories of him are as a kid. He spent a lot of time at my parents’ home. Whenever my brother and I heard he was coming for a visit, we could hardly wait. Uncle Dom would sit in mom’s kitchen chair and let me comb his hair all the time. Mom would joke, “Leave Uncle Dom alone so he can enjoy his dessert.” Uncle Dom would say how much he liked the way I styled his hair and how good it looked. He even gave me 25 cents for the “job.” Came in handy saving up for a 45 record. Vinyl was expensive. What I’ll remember most, though, is his sparkly, brown eyes and impish smile. Uncle Dom had me convinced that he used ear wax to shape his handlebar mustache!
