Obituary for Susan P Zahner (Peters)

ZAHNER, Susan (Peters), 77, of Ellington, beloved wife to Emery L. Zahner, peacefully passed away surrounded by her family on Thursday (July 13, 2023) at St. Francis Hospital. Susan (Sue) was born in Hartford, CT, on November 7, 1945, to the late and beloved John H. Peters III and Laurel (Howland) Peters. She was raised in Rockville, CT, and excelled academically throughout high school and college experiences at West Virginia Wesleyan College and the University of Hartford. Sue followed in her father’s footsteps after college, beginning her career at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft, where her leadership talent propelled her sales and management career at Gerber Systems/Scientific, Matra Datavision, and MacDac Engineering companies, among others. Throughout her years in the computer sales industry, she was recognized as a top computer hardware/software salesperson in North America, breaking gender barriers and paving the way for women in this formerly male-dominated field. Although Sue excelled throughout her career and thoroughly enjoyed her work, her greatest love was for her family. She leaves her loving husband of 54 years, Emery Zahner of Ellington, her children Keely and Walter Lee of Ellington and Dalton Zahner and Jennifer Aronne of Vernon, and five grandchildren, Katie and Fallon Lee, Teagan, Oliver, and Maeve Zahner. She also leaves her brother John H. Peters IV and his wife, Darryl (Red) of Eagle Lake, ME, cousins Norine and Stu Edwards, Faith Allen, and best friend of over 50 years, Patricia (Patty) Daniel and her husband, Dean. She also leaves her loving and adored nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and extended Zahner and Peters family relatives. Besides her parents, Sue is predeceased by her much-loved family, including Ellen and Gene Kupferschmid, Clayton and Marilyn Zahner, Richard Zahner, Charlie Allen, and Jenna Binkowski. Sue always presented herself with grace and kindness; however, she could also hold her own in any debate, effectively winning you over to her side even if you disagreed. She also loved the casino and the thrill of winning on the Red, White, and Blue dollar machine by the bathroom at Foxwoods and the New York Yankees. Sue’s strength, perseverance, and heart were immeasurable, and although we must be without her, we persevere in her honor and memory. Calling hours to celebrate Sue’s life will be held at the Longview Fellowship Center, 34 Middle Butcher Road, Ellington, CT, on Friday, August 4, 2023, from 3 pm to 6pm with a service at 6 pm. All friends and family are welcome. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Sue’s honor to the Midwest Food Bank of New England, 40 Adams Street, Manchester, CT, 06042.
