Obituary for John William "Jack" Spence

John ‘Jack’ William Spence, 93, of West Suffield, beloved husband of Ardyce Spence passed away December 24, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Kearney, Nebraska (NE) on February 9, 1929 son of the late Sydney and Hazel (Thulin) Spence.

He is survived by his beloved wife of over 72 years, Ardyce (Anderson) Spence, son Scott Spence of Fredericksburg, VA; two daughters Spence Tonne of Zephyr Hills, FL, and Melissa Spence and her partner Benney Ley of East Granby, CT; one grandchild Harrison Tonne, and his wife Jocelyn of Wesley Chapel, Fl and three great grandchildren Carter, Ashton, and Alina Tonne of Wesley Chapel, Fl.

He was predeceased by his three brothers Byron, Robert ‘Bob’ and Richard ‘Dick’ Spence.

Jack earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Wichita State University. Jack worked many different jobs in his day as he earned his degree while raising his 3 children. Some of his jobs included helping his father on the farm in NE, “buckin’ rivets” and then Cost Estimator at Boeing (Wichita,KS), salesman (Syracuse, NY), Cost Estimator at General Dynamics (Fort Worth, TX) and Kaman (Bloomfield, CT).


Besides his family, his passions included his faith, reading and playing the piano. In his later years, he just loved getting out of the house for what he called “a joy ride”.

The Funeral Services will be on Wednesday, January, 4, 2023 at 10:00 AM meeting directly at Christ Church Cathedral, 45 Church St, Hartford, CT 06103.

Burial will follow the service at Over the Mountain Burying Grounds, Phelps Road, West Suffield.
