Obituary for Eugene Markowski

Dr. Eugene Markowski (69) of Suffield, CT passed away Thursday, September 28th at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

Dr. Gene Markowski was a native son of Suffield, who was a respected and beloved member of his community. Following early education in Suffield, Gene attended Wilbraham & Monson Academy, Springfield College and Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston. Gene returned to Suffield and opened a successful dental practice, turning him into a fixture in the community for over 30 years prior to retiring in 2013.

In addition to a successful career, Gene was very active in a wide range of passions: as wide ranging as his love of gourmet cooking or woodworking, playing tennis or driving Austin-Healeys, planting a vineyard to make his own wine, avid supporter of the Suffield Players, playing cribbage or spending time with his dog Zoë. As a result of his wide range of interests, Gene influenced the lives of many. Gene had an infectious sense of humor and what most people remember about him are both his quick wit and thunderous laugh.

Gene was often the ringmaster organizing parties and activities that brought together his extended family along with friends that he quickly made to feel like family. He made a point of making everyone feel included, and especially appreciated anyone with enthusiasm for his mischief making.

On the occasion when Gene shared advice with others it revealed in its brevity his own simple life philosophy. As an example, in a speech at his daughter’s wedding, he simply said, “Just love each other. That’s what it’s all about!”

Gene is survived by his wife of 40 years Michelle Sullivan and their beloved dog Zoë; his daughter Dr. Allise Markowski and her husband Timothy Nealon of Suffield; his son Christopher Markowski of Suffield; his mother Victoria Markowski of Suffield; his sisters Barbara Groszyk of Suffield and Irene Jardin of West Simsbury; his five nieces Martha Groszyk and Linda Groszyk of San Francisco, Amy Sheiber of Newton, Liz Hubbard of Littleton, CO, Sarah Baltruweit of Boston, and Nephew Jeffrey Jardin of Springfield.

The family will be observing private services, but they invite all who wish to attend, to an Open House celebration with stories and memories of Gene’s life at the Nutmeg Restaurant at 297 S. Main St. in East Windsor on Saturday, October 7 from 11am to 2pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Also, please consider donating life saving blood and/or platelets at the American Red Cross in honor of Gene.
