Obituary for Ellen Kupferschmid (Zahner)

Ellen Zahner Kupferschmid, “Grammy,” 87, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, October 13, 2021. Fifteen months was long enough to be away from her beloved husband, Gene, of 62 years, and they are now together again. Ellen was born November 15, 1933, in Rockville, CT to the late John and Ruth Ludwig Zahner. Ellen was the oldest of four, having three younger brothers, which played a huge role in her “force to be reckoned with” personality. Living in the Ellington area all her life, she was a graduate of Rockville High School class of 1952 and took great pride in heading up the committee to plan each class reunion. Ellen worked as a bookkeeper for Zahner’s Woodworking before retiring to raise her family and, anyone who knew Grammy, knew that family was the most important thing in the world. Nothing made her happier than being surrounded by her children and grandchildren. There was always room at her table for anyone who came through her door, day or night.
After raising her own children, she opened a home daycare and raised those children as if they were her very own. Grammy loved camping trips, vacations with both family and friends, especially her trips to Florida, a good game of Make a Million, and cooking meals for those she loved. She was a gifted artist who loved to share her art with others. She was truly the matriarch of the family, and she will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her children Lisa Kupferschmid and Janet Binkowski, both of Ellington, Neal and Jenn Kupferschmid of Tolland, Gail and Kim Williams of Enfield, and son-in-law Robert Binkowski, as well as the loves of her life, her grandchildren Nicholas, Sara, Austin, Marley, Sophie, Max, Carter and Kiana. Her brother and sister-in-law, Emery and Sue Zahner. Her double-cousin and in all ways her sister, Norine Edwards. Her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Stuart Kupferschmid, Wayne and Marcia Kupferschmid, Danny and Terry Kupferschmid, and Dean and Joanne Kupferschmid, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers and sister-in-law Clayton and Mae Zahner, Richard Zahner, sisters-in-law and brother-in-law June and Vince Scotti, Barbara Kupferschmid, and her beloved granddaughter Jenna Binkowski.
Ellen will be greatly missed by the many special friends she made over her life, including those at the Apostolic Christian Church where she was a long-standing member, as well as Jackie Dube, who gave hours of companionship after she moved into her new home. Funeral services will be Saturday, October 16 at 11:30 a.m. at the Apostolic Christian Church, 34 Middle Butcher Rd., Ellington. Burial will follow in Ellington Center Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday morning 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Apostolic Christian Church of Ellington for the purpose of the fellowship center construction. All checks should be made payable to “Apostolic Christian Church of Ellington” with the memo “In Memory of Ellen Kupferschmid.” Checks can be mailed to 34 Middle Butcher Road, Ellington, CT. 06029.
