Obituary for Clayton Ludwig Zahner

Clayton Ludwig Zahner, 86, longtime resident of South Windsor, and more recently of Tolland, passed away on Wednesday, June 30, 2021 at Evergreen Health Care Center in Stafford.

Clayton was born on April 23, 1935, in Rockville, Conn., the son of the late John Ernest and Ruth (Ludwig) Zahner. He served his country in the U.S. Air National Guard for 9 years. Clayton was a carpenter and cabinet maker and started his career at Rockville Woodworking. He then co-owned Zahner's Woodworking in Tolland, followed by CSC, working as an independent contractor, finishing his career as foreman at the Village at Crystal Springs, in Tolland. He was a hardworking man from his teens to his retirement at age 71. He loved watching the Yankees and UConn football and was a huge fan of the women’s and men’s basketball teams, dating all the way back to the old Field House. He is predeceased by his wife of 46 years, Marilyn (West) Zahner, brother, Richard Zahner, and brother-in-law, Gene Kupferschmid.

Clayton loved his family with each holding a very special place in his heart. He leaves to mourn his passing: his son, Jason Zahner and wife, Gina, of Tolland. His sister, Ellen (Zahner) Kupferschmid, of Tolland and brother, Emery Zahner and wife Susan, of Ellington. His nieces and nephews: Lisa Kupferschmid, of Ellington, Janet (Kupferschmid) Binkowski, of Ellington, Robert Binkowski, of Ellington, Neal Kupferschmid and wife, Jennifer, of Tolland, Gail (Kupferschmid) Williams and husband, Kim, of Enfield, Keely (Zahner) Lee and husband, Walter, of Ellington, Dalton Zahner and Jen Aronne, of Rockville. Grandchildren: Bobby Kaplan, of Somers, Kelsey Kaplan, of Tolland, and Wilsey Catelyn Zahner, the center of his universe.

The Graveside Service will be on Thursday, July 8th at 11am in Ellington Center Cemetery, 95 Maple St., Ellington. Please meet directly at cemetery.
