Obituary for Alan Hefflon

Alan Hefflon
Alan Hefflon, 81, of West Suffield, beloved husband of Patricia (Houston) Hefflon, passed away suddenly, yet very peacefully, on January 28, 2017, in Florida surrounded by his loving family. He and his wife were on a Caribbean cruise when he suffered a medical emergency. Born December 21, 1935, in Jamaica, Vermont, he was the son of Otis and Doris (Robinson) Hefflon. He graduated from LGS in Townshend, Vermont, in 1953.

After graduating from Wentworth Institute with Honors in 1956 and serving in the U.S. Army for 2 years teaching Guided Missile Electronics, he graduated from the University of Vermont on June 9, 1963, with a BS in Electrical Engineering. He was a member of Tau Beta Pi (National Engineering Honor Society) and Phi Mu Delta. On June 15, 1963 in St. Albans, Vermont, he married Patricia Houston, the love of his life. He was employed by Hamilton Standard (now UTC Aerospace Systems) for 30 years, being most proud of his project on the Lunar Module in the Apollo Space Program, which brought the astronauts safely back to Earth from the moon during the Apollo 13 mission accident.

At his center was his love of family. His favorite times were those spent with his wife and children and grandchildren, and he was so proud of them. Not a day went by that he did not know they were his greatest treasures. He had been a member of The First Church of Christ, Congregational, of Suffield for nearly 50 years and was a Deacon Emeritus, to him the highest honor he ever received. His Church and his Church family were so important to him. They gave him strength and immense happiness. To greet people before worship every Sunday morning was his greatest joy. He had been instrumental in setting up the sound system for recording services and concerts, then making CDs for others to enjoy. He was a significant contributor to the design and implementation of the church’s magnificent organ and chimes and anonymously penned the weekly column for the Church Bulletin “Words from the Loft”. He had been the Genealogist of the Bristol Family Association for nearly 50 years. He and his wife Pat had authored 2 genealogy books on the descendants of Henry Bristol, his ancestor, a founder of New Haven. Alan and Pat loved to travel and had been all over the world; his favorite trip was to Norway above the Arctic Circle on the Summer Solstice when the sun never sets. He also had a passion for classical music and was an avid fan of the UConn women’s basketball team. His dry sense of humor and his love of story-telling will always be cherished.

Besides his loving wife Pat of 53 years, he is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law Cindy and Steve Hannan of Westborough, MA, and Christy and Shane Yeager of Sykesville, MD, and two sons and a daughter-in-law Scott Hefflon of Gwynn Oaks, MD, and Jay and Kristin Hefflon of Louisville, CO, and six grandchildren Jeff, Emily, Maggie, Sean, Gwen, and Julia.

Husband, Father, Grandfather, Friend – He will be missed more than words can ever say. A Memorial Service to celebrate his life will be held Saturday, February 11, at 11 am at The First Church of Christ, Congregational. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The First Church of Christ, Congregational, 81 High Street, Suffield, CT 06078. The Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
