Obituary for CWO Charles Alexander "Charlie" Fields Jr.

CWO Charles Alexander "Charlie" Fields Jr.
Charles A. Fields, Jr. passed away peacefully on Saturday June 9, 2018 and had been a resident of Enfield, CT for more than 57 years. Charlie was known for his bright smile and kind and gentle ways. He was born on October 6, 1940 in Springfield, MA the only child of Charles and Mary (Sherman) Fields. Charlie attended Springfield Technical High School and after graduation joined the U. S. Marine Corps, a dream of his. He had a distinguished service career that included being selected as a Drill Instructor to new recruits on Parris Island for three years during the Vietnam War, which was the longest they allowed. After a tour of duty in Vietnam he was awarded several medals including the Navy Commendation Medal. He returned to the States and accepted an appointment as a candidate for Warrant Officer School which he graduated in 1973 before working for the Inspector General of the Marine Corp until his retirement in 1979.

Civilian life began with Charlie returning to CT with his family, where he worked briefly in the Health Care Industry before he and his wife Ruth purchased Windsor Racquet and Fitness Centre which they ran successfully for 10 years. From there he worked as a Superintendent in the residential construction industry until he left to start Suffield Hardware, Inc. with his wife Ruth in 1991. They opened the store in the Suffield Shopping Center until purchasing the old post office and moved into the renovated building in its current location on Mountain Rd. After 25 years in the hardware business they retired and their son George has taken it over.

Charlie married his High School sweetheart Ruth (Rossmeisl) in 1960. Besides his wife of 57 years he is survived by his sons Charles and his wife Sandra of Enfield, George and his wife Kristie of Suffield, and daughter Margaret (Maggie) and her husband Robert Simon of Shelton; his six grandchildren Adam, Dylan, Erin, Jessica, Charles IV Fields and Matthew Simon, and great granddaughter Eleanor Rose Fields.

The Family would like to extend their sincerest thanks to the many staff members of Bickford Health Care and Beacon Hospice for their kindness and compassion during the time Charlie was there.
